However, being born during the peak of leaf-bare, the youngest sister of the family, Shadekit, died from greencough, as well as quite a few other cats that season. Wildkit had stayed healthy through her whole kithood.

As an apprentice, Wildpaw was mentored by the lackadaisical and goofy white warrior, Cloudflight. His ways were what motivated Wildpaw to work with herself, using him as an example on how not to be a warrior. It was very unlikely that Wildpaw was going to be put in the Warrior Games, but with her father finally convincing her leader, she was chosen to take part in the 8th year of the Games at 12 moons old. She didn't win the hunting and fighting parts of the Games, but she did place first in the Great Race, which, due to tradition, put her into training to become the next leader.

As a warrior and under training from her own father and her red tabby leader, Rosestar, Wildrush fell in love at an early age to the large gray tabby, Rainstrike. They had a litter of two male kits, named Silverkit and Dustkit. However, soon after their litter, Rainstrike turned on Volestripe during a patrol and killed him, fleeing before anyone else could jump to attack. The Clan mourned, and with this sudden death came Wildrush's premature deputyship at only 30 moons.

The next Gathering brought forth a stunning surprise, when it was revealed that ShadowClan had taken in the former ThunderClan warrior, Rainstrike. Wildrush had given her kits up to a more experienced queen of the Clan, a spotted she-cat named Sandpebble with a litter of three kits. Grew up normally, except for the fact that he showed strange behavior in constantly bathing himself, but refusing to let his mother, or anyone else, for that matter, touch him with their tongues.

As an apprentice, Ashpaw was trained by the strict and demanding ginger and white tabby tom, Emberheart, who instilled into the young apprentice hard work and perfection, which Ashpaw kept with him into his warrior days. He was never chosen to take part in the Warrior Games, and was given his warrior name, Ashtail, at 18 moons of age. His belated naming ceremony was due to the fact that Ashpaw didn't believe that he was good enough to be a warrior yet, and finally, he was held a surprise naming ceremony.
