In the wild, the queen would bring prey to the kittens. When they are domesticated, a queen will bring small pieces of meat to the nest, making a unique encouraging sound to attract her kitten’s attention. Mother cats oftentimes pat the meat, teaching her kits to pounce on it. Kits begin to practice hunting movements, ducking down, bounding, and making mock attacks on their littermates. The mother cat waves her tail, tempting her kits to pounce and grasp it. When they are adults, cats tend to prefer to hunt alone within the borders of their own territory. Some cats roam vast distances from home to visit favored hunting grounds, and on occasion, cats from the same family learn to hunt cooperatively. Acute hearing and first-rate vision in dim light permits the cat to become competent, virtually silent hunters. A cat will lie in ambush, waiting with patience for its prey to emerge from its hiding place. It then attacks in a quick bounding leap, clutching its prey with unsheathed claws and killing it with a deadly bite to the back of the prey’s neck. Hungry cats devour their prey hastily, but well-fed cats, stimulated by the excitement of stalking and capture, often play with their food before eating it. Playing with prey gives the cat an opportunity to practice trapping techniques. Despite years of its domestication, most cats will hunt if given the chance.[/style][/style][/style] |
