Hawkpaw would be her first apprentice and she was a little worried about not living up to the challenge, especially when the cold season was in play, where there wasn’t much prey to catch and therefore, not a lot of prey to practice hunting skills on. Still, even though bees buzzed nervously in her stomach at the worry of failing herself, the clan and even hawkpaw himself, the tortoiseshell felt determined to do her best and hopefully have a positive day with her new apprentice. Redberry had led the tabby tom away from the comfort of the thunderclan camp and their warm nests, deciding to take him to the ancient oak so they could practice some hunting. The tortoiseshell hoped that, if there was to be prey lurking about, it would be near the huge twisting tree. After all it provided shelter and warmth for small animals, enclosed within comforting forestry, she held a sunbeam of hope that a bird will come scratching for worms or a mouse will emerge. If all else failed she guessed they could use old leaves as prey to practice on but that would be the last resort, it was much better to practice with real mice, especially when there was a hungry clan to feed back in the hollow. It didn’t take long for the pair to reach the ancient oak at a quick pace, Redberry leading the way and gracefully leaping over fallen tree branches, her slender frame making it easy to weave and trot to their destination. Olive green eyes glanced back once or twice to see if Hawkpaw was on her tail, achknowledging his presense with a warm expression. Though she may be mentally shivering in her fur at messing up with the tom, she couldn’t help but feel somewhat proud and happy that she had finally received her first apprentice! True, hawkpaw had already had some mentors and none of them ended with good results, but Redberry didn’t mind that she was taking up an experienced apprentice rather than a kit fresh out of the nursery. Still, she knew she would have to converse with him about what he already knew, it wouldn’t do the tom any good to start from the very beginning. Coming to a stop near the twisted oak tree, she turned to face the tabby and gestured to the landmark before them with a flick of her tail. “Okay Hawkpaw, we’re going to be practicing your hunting today. How about you show me how you would go about finding and catching some prey? I’ll evaluate you, then decide what you can improve on and what I need to teach you.” After all, she didn't know how much Hawkpaw had learned over the moons, this way she could see for herself what the apprentice would need to work on.[/style] 518 WORDS WORDS WORDS FIRST TRAINING THREAD.
